Nagorno-Karabakh, dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Publié le par revivall

The enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh is a powder keg at the heart of a 25-year-old dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Its people are mostly Armenian, but under the Soviet Union it was ruled by Azerbaijan. In 1991 it declared independence in the midst of a six-year war that cost 30,000 lives. A fragile truce still holds, but Armenia occupies large swathes of Azeri land, and oil-rich Azerbaijan is building a powerful new army.
