Les carottes de glace du Groenland révèlent un climat chaud dans le passé

Dans la période comprise entre 130.000 et 115.000 années plus tôt, le climat de la Terre était plus chaude qu'aujourd'hui. Mais comment était-il beaucoup plus chaud? et qu'est-ce que le réchauffement a fait sur le niveau des mers? Une nouvelle étude du projet NEEM sur le carottage de la glace au Groenland montre que la période a été plus chaude que prévu. Le projet de recherche international est dirigé par des chercheurs de l'Institut de Niels Bohr et les résultats très importants sont publiés dans la prestigieuse revue scientifique Nature.

 

Le graphique indique la température du climat de la période interglaciaire chaude précédente, l'Eémien. Les couleurs bleues indiquent de la glace sur une période de froid, la couleur rouge est de la glace sur une période chaude et les couleurs jaune et verte se situe dans la période climatique entre les deux. Les nouveaux résultats montrent que durant l'Eémien entre 130.000 à 115.000 ans, le climat au Groenland était d'environ 8 degrés C plus élevées qu'aujourd'hui.

La partie supérieure montre un graphique de la température de surface de la calotte glaciaire et de l'altitude. Au début de l'Eémien, il ya 128.000 années, la calotte glaciaire au nord-ouest du Groenland était de 200 mètres plus élevé qu'aujourd'hui, mais au cours de la période chaude de l'Eémien, la masse de glace a régressé, alors 122.000 années avant maintenant la surface était tombé à un niveau de 130 mètres en dessous du niveau actuel. Pendant le reste de l'Eémien la calotte glaciaire est restée stable au même niveau avec une épaisseur de glace de 2.400 mètres.
